My name is Heather Greville and I am a breast cancer survivor.
Inspiration can come from many sources, mine came in 2010 after I joined the Stoney Creek Quilters Guild to learn how to quilt. It certainly didn’t take long for my stash of material to grow...and grow...and grow! I had to find something to do with all the smaller pieces my quilting was producing. In the cupboard I had a pattern for a child’s sun hat, so I pulled it out and started cutting and sewing, creating handcrafted hats for children. Seeing little children out in the blazing sun without any head protection has always been a pet peeve of mine.
Fast forward to June 2012 and the next thing I know the doctor was telling me that due to chemo treatments scheduled in the coming months, I would lose all my hair. I managed to complete the chemo and radiation treatments but still felt that there was something more I needed to do. During my treatment visits to the JCC in Hamilton I received many compliments from patients and staff alike on the store bought hat(s) that I had been wearing at the time. It wasn’t until after a friend asked me ‘do you make ladies hats?’ that it hit me, I should try creating a sun hat for ladies. My friend now has her ‘garden hat’ as well as other lady friends who had asked for one too!
So now, through this amazing website ‘my fund partner’ I am on a mission to sell my hats to raise not only funds for cancer but also to raise awareness that children and adults alike benefit by putting their hats on.
If you or someone you know has been affected by this terrible disease you then know how the smallest thing can make such a huge difference in putting a smile on the face of a person fighting this battle.
